Why Does The Scale Fluctuate So Much?!

Frustrated by scale fluctuations? It is totally normal for the scale to fluctuate regardless of what phase of dieting you’re in. But it’s particularly frustrating when you’re on a weight loss journey and see these pesky spikes.

Daily weight fluctuations are NORMAL! We don’t treat our body the same every single day so we can’t expect the scale to be the same every day either. And even if you ate, drank, trained, moved, slept, stressed, and went to the bathroom the same every single day… it would still fluctuate.

Being aware that these fluctuations are normal can help a ton next time you see a spike and it sends you spiraling. It doesn’t mean you’ve gained fat or that your diet isn’t working… it just means you’re normal.

Here are some reasons why the scale might fluctuate:

  • Weighing at a different time

  • You ate later than usual

  • You ate a larger meal the night before

  • You went out to eat

  • You drank the day before

  • You slept like crap

  • You had a tough workout

  • Dehydration

  • Over-hydration

  • Stress is elevated

  • Higher carb intake

  • Higher sodium intake

  • Digestion is funky

So next time the scale fluctuates (which it will), see if you can identify from this list what might be causing the spike. And instead of letting it derail your day, remind yourself that this is normal and you’re doing just fine!
