My Goal Weight Was Wrong

If I had let my goal weight run the show, I’d still be weak, tired, and food obsessed. It turns out that the healthiest version of yourself probably isn’t the smallest.

The healthiest version of you yourself probably isn't the smallest!

When I first started lifting in college, I weighed around 115lbs. And at that time, I was absolutely convinced that 115lbs was the perfect weight for me. I latched on to that number and any time I deviated from it, I felt like a failure. Because after all, I had been fluctuating around that weight for the last few years feeling pretty good, so surely this was it for me. I was focused solely on the number on the scale.

Fast forward to today and I’m sitting around 140lbs… and that’s after cutting down from my peak bulking weight of 150. If you would have told me 5 years ago that I was going to be sitting her 25lbs heavier, I probably would have dropped dead.

25lbs has come with a tremendous amount of growth not just physically, but mentally. And if I was still solely focused on the number on the scale, I’d probably feel like a huge failure right now. But the reality is that my life now is so much better and fuller because of that extra weight!

  • I have a healthier relationship with food and actually enjoy going out to eat instead of being anxious about the macros

  • I sleep like a rock

  • I’m strong as hell… like doubled my squat 1RM in the last 5 years

  • I have energy and don’t crash at 3pm

  • I actually love my body at this size

I’m here to remind you that you don’t have one “happy weight.” It’s completely unfair to compare yourself now to a version of yourself that was living a different version of your life. Our bodies are meant to change and especially if you have strength and body composition goals, you’re going to need to pack on some more muscle (and therefore some extra pounds) to reach those goals.

The scale is just one number. It doesn’t paint the whole picture and it certainly isn’t a proxy for the value you bring to the world!
