I want to meal prep BUT I’m busy vs. I want to meal prep AND I’m busy…
How different do those two sentences sound? The word “but” tends to cancel out or dismiss the first part of the statement. It implies that becuase I’m busy, I cannot meal prep. The reality? Both things can exist at the same time! using “and” allows for more flexibility. I can still meal prep even though I’m busy. The words you choose matter!
🏋️♀️I want to workout BUT I’m tired
🥙I want to go out for dinner BUT I’m tracking macros
💜I want to prioritize myself BUT I don’t want to disappoint my partner
Why can’t those things exist together?
🏋️♀️I want to workout AND I’m tired — I can go to the gym even though I’m tired
🥙I want to go out for dinner AND I’m tracking macros — I can enjoy a meal out while being mindful of my goals
💜I want to prioritize myself AND I don’t want to disappoint my partner — I can love myself while still taking care of those around me
It can feel really challenging to accept that these things can exist together. And one of the best tools we have for acceptance is this simple word flip.
Swapping but for and reminds you that you can be two things at once! The word “and” allows for much more flexibility meaning that you can experience a wide range of thoughts, feelings, and impulses AND still act autonomously without letting those things impact your actions.
